Vaishnava Tilak

Tilak is the clay marking a Vaishnava applies to the forehead and body each morning, in the shape of the Lord’s footprint, with the tulasi leaf between the lines. It marks the body as a temple and the wearer as someone’s servant. Devotees who work in offices know the daily question of whether to wear it out of the house, which is part of why it turns up so often on clothing: a quieter way of carrying the same mark.

Tilak appears as clean line art, as a patchwork pattern, and most often with the Hare Krishna maha-mantra lettered inside the shape of the tilak itself. That design is the shop’s most-embroidered piece, appearing on snapbacks, vintage twill caps, bucket hats and beanies, and it also runs on t-shirts, hoodies, all-over print hoodies, journals, phone cases, car stickers, vinyl stickers and pin badges. Related: the Hare Krishna maha-mantra.
